The eight northeastern states of India—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—generate only 1.93% of the country’s urban waste, with over 85% collected. However, waste processing is a challenge, with Sikkim processing just 16.68%, while the rest ends up in landfills, waterbodies, and forests, threatening biodiversity. Factors like geographical diversity, limited connectivity, and tourism complicate waste management. To assess issue and develop a solid waste management roadmap, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) organized a conclave joined by 54 participants, including government officials, researchers, industrialists, NGOs, startup etc.
